H. Brown Miller, a professor at City College of San Francisco, taught creative writing. But he did more than just teach, he acted as the hub of our circle, he was the facilitator, and taught us by letting us teach ourselves.
The biggest lesson was that poetry is meant to be heard, not just to hear the words spoken out load, but to listen to its music expressed in rhythm and rhyme.
The class was simply a roundtable of reading poems, and giving critique which allowed us all to be both student and teacher.
One member of our circle was Seaborn Jones who had a wonderful voice and poetic style. He went on to be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his poetry. He had three volumes of poetry, Lost Keys, Going into the Woods Farther than the Woods Go, and Drowning From the Inside Out.
Not everyone achieved such notoriety, but the quality of their work was still impressive. I will share some of those poems that I was gifted with hearing them out loud.
